When bonding is the right choice

Bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin, shaped directly onto the tooth and hardened with a curing light. Because it is sculpted in the mouth, the whole thing is usually finished in a single appointment, often in under an hour.

It suits small corrections well: a chipped edge, a narrow gap, a slightly short tooth, or an exposed root surface near the gum line. Very little preparation is needed, and in many cases no anesthetic at all.

Composite is not as hard or as stain-resistant as porcelain, so for larger changes or heavily loaded surfaces a veneer or crown will last considerably longer. We will be straight with you about which category your situation falls into.

Its limits are worth knowing. Composite is softer than porcelain and picks up stain sooner, so on a heavily loaded biting edge or across a whole smile it will not hold up the way veneers do. Where you want a small correction done today, bonding is the right tool; where you want eight teeth changed for fifteen years, it is not.

What bonding fixes well

  • A chipped edge on a front tooth, often from biting something hard.
  • A narrow gap between two teeth that you would rather close without orthodontics.
  • A tooth that sits slightly short or narrow compared with its neighbour.
  • An exposed, sensitive root surface near the gum line where the gum has receded.

What to expect

Most bonding is completed in one visit.

  1. 1 Shade match We select a composite shade against your natural tooth in daylight — matching in artificial light alone is how bonding ends up looking obvious.
  2. 2 Sculpt and cure The surface is lightly conditioned, the resin is layered and shaped, then hardened.
  3. 3 Polish We refine the contour and polish to a natural lustre, then check it against your bite.

Making bonding last

Expect several years from well-placed bonding. It will pick up stain faster than enamel, so coffee, tea and tobacco show sooner. Avoid using bonded edges to bite nails or open things, and let us know early if an edge starts to catch — a small repair is straightforward.

How long does bonding last?
Several years is typical, and edges that take heavy biting force wear sooner. It is straightforward to repair or refresh — usually without touching the tooth underneath.
Does bonding require drilling or anesthetic?
Often neither. The surface is lightly etched so the composite adheres, which most people do not feel. Anesthetic is only needed where decay is being removed at the same time.
Will it match my other teeth?
Composite comes in a range of shades and we layer it to match the tooth beside it, including translucency at the edge. It matches well at placement; over years it may stain slightly differently from enamel, which is when a polish or refresh helps.
Can bonding close a gap between my front teeth?
Yes, for narrow gaps. Wider ones are better closed with orthodontics or veneers — widening two teeth too far to meet in the middle leaves them looking bulky and traps plaque at the gum line.
How do I keep bonding looking good?
Treat it as you would enamel, but expect stain sooner from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Do not use bonded edges to open packaging or bite nails, and keep regular cleanings — polishing removes surface stain and restores the shine.
