What counts as a dental emergency

Severe or persistent toothache, a knocked-out or loosened tooth, a cracked or broken tooth, swelling of the face or gums, uncontrolled bleeding, or a lost crown or filling that has left a tooth sharp and exposed — all of these warrant a call the same day.

If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently without scrubbing, and keep it moist — ideally back in the socket, or in milk. Time matters a great deal here.

Call before you drive over. A phone call lets us triage — some problems need to be seen within the hour, some are safe to hold until tomorrow, and a few need an emergency room rather than a dental chair. Either way we can usually tell you what to do in the meantime to be more comfortable, and we make every attempt to see patients in pain within 24 hours.

Go straight to an emergency room, not to us, if swelling is spreading towards your eye or down your neck, if you have a fever alongside dental pain, or if swallowing or breathing is becoming difficult. Those are signs of a spreading infection and they are treated as urgent medical problems rather than dental ones.

Call us the same day if

  • You have severe or throbbing tooth pain, especially pain that wakes you at night.
  • A permanent tooth has been knocked out, loosened, or pushed out of position.
  • A tooth is cracked or broken, or a crown or filling has come out and left a sharp edge.
  • Your face, jaw or gums are swollen, or there is bleeding that will not stop.

What to expect

Call first. We will triage over the phone and get you in as quickly as we can.

  1. 1 Call us Describe what happened and where it hurts. We will tell you what to do in the meantime and find you the earliest slot.
  2. 2 Relief first Our first priority is getting you out of pain and stabilizing the tooth — definitive treatment can often follow later.
  3. 3 The full fix Once you are comfortable, we plan the permanent repair and explain the options and costs before proceeding.

Preventing the next one

Many emergencies are the end of a long story — a small crack that grew, or decay that went unchecked. Regular exams catch those early. If you grind your teeth or play contact sports, a custom mouthguard is worth far more than it costs.

Can you see me today?
We make every attempt to see emergency patients within 24 hours, and often the same day. Call 425-353-5854 and describe what has happened — the earlier in the day you call, the more options we have.
What do I do with a knocked-out tooth?
Handle it by the crown, never the root. Rinse it gently without scrubbing, and if you can, put it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth. If you cannot, keep it in milk. Then call immediately — with a permanent tooth the chance of saving it drops sharply after the first hour.
How do I manage the pain until I get there?
Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed, and a cold compress against the outside of the cheek for swelling. Do not hold aspirin against the gum — it burns the tissue. Avoid very hot or cold food and chew on the other side.
Do I need an emergency room instead?
Yes if there is spreading facial swelling, a fever with dental pain, difficulty swallowing or breathing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a suspected broken jaw. An emergency room can treat the infection and stabilize you; the dental repair follows afterwards.
